Formerly known as Support, Help and Empowerment (SHE), Engender Equality is a free and confidential counselling service for people who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic violence and/or abuse.
Counsellors are trained in the dynamics of domestic violence and abuse, inclusive of LGBTIQ relationships. We counsel from a strengths-based, trauma-informed perspective. Professional development is ongoing, and includes being informed about issues facing LGBTIQ communities and individuals. Our services can be used for as long as it is beneficial to you.
Domestic violence and abuse is covert in nature. For the LGBTIQ community these dynamics constitute “another closet” to escape from, compromising health and well being. Being conscious of this, we aim to create a space that acknowledges and is welcoming and inclusive of LGBTIQ people.
“The place is lovely, a house in an ordinary street…made me feel at home…my counsellor got where I was coming from immediately…I didn’t feel judged or blamed.”
